Hightown Dunes – 23rd May 2025

The Hightown Dunes and Meadows nature reserve stretches from Hall Road Coastguard Station to the mouth of the River Alt. The site consists of sand dunes, a small saltmarsh, freshwater ponds, willow and poplar scrub and wildflower meadows.

Phorbia penicillaris (Anthomyiidae), P. Brighton

  • A fly never before recorded in Britain.
  • This species has a wide distribution across Europe, from Germany and Scandinavia to France and Hungary, and even as far afield as North America. It is often found in dunes and sandy habitats, making Hightown Dunes – 60 hectares of grassland, scrub, reed-bed, and saltmarsh – a typical setting.
