iRecord and Pantheon: recording invertebrates and interpreting the results

This workshop focuses on iRecord and Pantheon, two online resources that can help you record and interpret your observations of insects and other invertebrates.

iRecord (https://www.brc.ac.uk/irecord/) is an online system for recording wildlife observations and making those records available to national recording schemes and local environmental records centres. It is maintained by the Biological Records Centre at the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH).

Pantheon (www.brc.ac.uk/pantheon) is an online database tool for interpreting invertebrate species lists, adding habitat traits and other information to lists for particular sites. It has been developed by Natural England and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) to assist invertebrate nature conservation in England.

This workshop will demonstrate how you can use these two systems to record your invertebrate observations and then ‘add value’ to them via the information stored in Pantheon. We will work through some prepared examples, and you may also wish to bring some of your own species data with you (e.g. as a spreadsheet) so that you can try the system out for sites that you know. All that you need is a list of species from a site (this can be from a single sample on a single date, or from multiple samples combined).

To fully participate in this workshop you will need a computer that is connected to the internet. Please bring your own laptop if you can.

Tutor biog:

Martin Harvey is an entomologist and biological recorder. He works part-time at the Biological Records Centre at CEH Wallingford. In 2016 he coordinated a review of Pantheon for Natural England, working with other entomologists to steer its development, and he is a member of the Pantheon steering group. He also uses Pantheon to help analyse data from his own entomological surveys.
