An Introduction to Moth Dissection

10th November 2018 | 10:30 am - 4:00 pm
Free

Lepidoptera are the best recorded order of insects in the UK with 10s of millions of records collated since 1800s. However, some of >2500 species are cryptic of terms of differences and can only be identified, and therefore recorded, by looking at internal structures. Because special equipment and skills are required to study internal structures, fewer Lepidopterists record them and therefore our understanding of their conservation needs are poorer.

Tutored by John Girdley, this indoor one-day workshop will introduce you to dissection techniques for moths for the purposes of identification and biological recording (which ultimately underpins moth conservation), including an opportunity to practise identifying some cryptic common species.

Adults only. Ideally, you will already have experience identifying and recording moths. You are encouraged to bring your own specimens to practise with but this is not essential.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided but please bring a packed lunch or use the Leighton Moss café.

A joint workshop with Lancashire Moth Group.
