On 2nd June 2024 noticed a Rhagionid fly perched on a leaf in my garden. It was obviously a species of Chrysopilus, but had patterned wings, which is unusual. Using Stubbs & Drake and a European key it ran to Chrysopilus laetus – subsequently confirmed by photos checked by Martin Harvey – who stated it has been spreading and has recently been found in Manchester too. Apparently its stated preference for ancient woodland in Stubbs & Drake is not true on the continent – and certainly not for my garden!
