SUMMARY:Earthworm Identification Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Book here –  tickets are £15 includes a copy of the Key to the Earthworms of the UK & Ireland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are 31 species of earthworm living freely in soils in the UK. They are vital to the economic health of our country\, as they are crucial for soil health\, food production\, waste decomposition and even flood mitigation. \nDespite their importance\, relatively few people are skilled in identifying earthworms to species level. Identification of earthworms involves inspecting specimens under a microscope to observe key morphological features that are often too small to see with the naked eye. \nHowever\, with only 5 features used to distinguish between the 31 species\, earthworms are a great group for novices. Learn the difference between a tanylobic and epilobic head type\, how to record the position of the clitellum and how to determine if the setae on an earthworm are closely or widely paired. \n\n\n\n\nWhat will be covered during this course? \nThis course provides an introduction to identifying British earthworms. This includes a short presentation introducing the morphological features used to identify specimens to species level and support from an Earthworm Society of Britain tutor throughout the practical sessions. \nPlease note that this course will involve using specimens that have been killed and preserved. \nBy the end of the course\, learners will: \n\nUnderstand which external (morphological) features used in earthworm identification.\nKnow how to work through the Key to the Earthworms of the UK & Ireland to determine earthworm specimens accurately to species level.\nHave practical experience observing earthworm ID features using a microscope and specimen collection.\nNo microscope experience is necessary – our tutors will set up and show you how to use a microscope.\n\n\n\n\n\nCourse resource \nThe teaching text for this course is the Key to the Earthworms of the UK & Ireland (2nd edition) by Emma Sherlock\, produced in 2019 by the Field Studies Council as part of their AIDGAP series (Aids to the Identification of Difficult Groups of Animals and Plants). \nEach attendee will be given a free copy of the publication to keep at the beginning of the course. \nEarthworm Tutor: Keiron Brown \nKeiron has been involved with a range of invertebrate projects across the UK\, including designing and managing the BioLinks project for the Field Studies Council. He set up the Biological Recording Company\, where he highlights invertebrate research through the entoLIVE series and runs a wide range of invertebrate courses and events. In his spare time\, he is an Entomology Chair of the London Natural History Society and is the National Recorder for Earthworms. \nIn partnership with the Biological Recording Company\, Forest of Bowland National Landscape and Earthworm Society of Britain \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLunch is not provided but tea\, coffee\, water and biscuits will be available.

SUMMARY:Earthworm Sampling Day
DESCRIPTION:This event will be held at Sefton Park in Liverpool. Book here. \nJoin like-minded people with an interest in recording wildlife observations for a day surveying earthworms. The specimens collected will help us to build up a a library of images for the Earthworm Image Recognition Project and generate earthworm species list for the site. All records will be added to the National Earthworm Recording Scheme database. Sampling earthworms involves conducting microhabitat searches and hand-sorting soil pit samples to collect specimens for identification by our trained earthworm recorders at a later date. \nParticipants will also be asked to take photographs of the earthworms that they collect and submit these to the Earthworm Image Recognition Project – an exciting collaboration with the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology to create and test an app that will attempt to identify earthworms using AI. \nWhat will the day involve? \n\nPractical experience using a variety of methods to survey and sample earthworms.\nPractical experience in collecting and preserving earthworm specimens.\nContributing to an innovative project involving smartphone photography and AI.\nA chance to meet fellow like-minded people from a range of different disciplines.\n\nPlease note that this event will involve individuals collecting\, preserving and killing earthworm specimens for identification purposes. \nEarthworm Specialist: Keiron Derek Brown \nKeiron has been running the National Earthworm Recording Scheme since it was launched in 2014. He has run over 100 earthworm training courses and events since 20214\, covering a wide range of subjects including biology\, ecology\, surveying\, identification and recording. He is currently authoring a Provisional Earthworm Conservation Status Assessment for the UK on behalf of Natural England. \nRecording the UK’s earthworms \nAll records generated through this event will be submitted to iRecord in order to share our findings with the site managers\, the Local Environmental Record Centre and the National Earthworm Recording Scheme. \nThe photos generated will be shared with the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and used to train an image recognition AI to assist farmers with earthworm identification. \nThis event is in partnership with the Biological Recording Company and is supported by the Earthworm Society of Britain.

SUMMARY:Spider Families Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Book here –  tickets are £7.50 \nRichard Gallon from the British Arachnological Society’s Spider Recording Scheme will lead this workshop on identifying UK spider families. \nThe workshop will use preserved specimens to help understand the morphological differences between spider families. Field characteristics and webs will also be presented which help recognise the different groups. \nBeing able to correctly place your specimen to family level is particularly helpful when trying to identify spiders to species\, since the group is species-rich. By limiting your options to one or two families you can make species identification much easier. \nLunch is not provided but tea\, coffee\, water and biscuits will be available.

SUMMARY:Millipedes Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Book here – tickets are £7.50 \nMillipedes (Diplopoda) are an easily overlooked group of animals because of their secretive lifestyles in soil or under bark.  There are over 60 species in Britain\, so offer good variety\, but without too daunting a challenge for the beginner.  Several species can be identified with a hand-lens in the field although the majority need to be examined more closely under a microscope. \nThis workshop is aimed at people with little or no experience of millipedes\, however\, it should also appeal to those with a little more experience wanting to extend their knowledge. The day will include introductory talks and microscope practice to gain familiarity with identification characteristics and ecology. Some preserved specimens will be available for examination\, although attendees are welcome to bring along their own for identification. \nTutor information: Paul Richards wrote the BMIG guide to millipedes\, centipedes and woodlice\, and has nearly 40 years’ experience as a professional zoologist\, curator and ecologist specialising in ground invertebrates. \nAccess: There are lifts between each of the floors and assistance dogs are permitted \nAdults only (18+)

SUMMARY:Slugs Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Slugs are commonly encountered in gardens\, but also occur in wild environments. Despite their reputation for feeding on plants\, many species have diverse diets\, exhibit unusual behaviours and perform a wide range of functions in our ecosystem. Recent decades has seen significant changes in the British and Irish slug faunas. Less than half the current fauna of 44 species is considered native\, so recording slugs is becoming increasingly important. This webinar will introduce slugs\, their ecology\, their families\, and the iconic species that can be found in Britain and Ireland. \nOur tutor\, Imogen Cavadino\, has been studying slugs and snails intensively for the past six years. They trained in terrestrial mollusc identification as part of the TCV “Natural Talent” Apprenticeship scheme\, and is currently completing a PhD on understanding slug and snail diversity in Britain. Her main interest is in slugs\, frequently delivering talks and training courses on slug identification. \nWe will end with an interactive question and answer session. \nPlease book your space via Eventbrite and you will be sent information on how to join the webinar. \nThis session will run on Zoom. SUMMARY:Harvestmen Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Book here – tickets are £7.50 \nYou may know the group of arachnids\, ‘Opiliones’ as Harvestmen or daddy-long-legs spiders. This course will offer insight into how these fascinating animals are very much not spiders and introduce you to their life histories and ecology. \nThis workshop will be at Leighton Moss\, Carnforth and will cover a basic introduction to life histories\, ecology\, collecting and recording before looking at the key characters for identifying species. This will be a good introduction to allow you to recognise a good proportion of the 33 British species including several new discoveries which are spreading rapidly across the country and may be in a garden near you\, waiting to be discovered. \nThe workshop will include richly illustrated indoor presentations\, observing specimens under microscopes and opportunities to try field collection and identification skills. \nTutor information: Paul Richards has nearly 40 years experience as a professional zoologist\, curator and ecologist specialising in ground invertebrates. He is Sorby Natural History Society recorder for Millipedes\, Centipedes\, Woodlice\, Harvestmen\, and Pseudoscorpions. He wrote the BMIG guide to millipedes\, centipedes and woodlice as well as the new atlas of Dragonflies of the Sheffield area and the recently updated FSC field guide to British Harvestmen. \nAdults only (18+)

SUMMARY:Freshwater Snails Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Booking here –  tickets are £7.50 \nFreshwater snails play a vital role in food webs and water purification. Some indicate unspoilt or very specialised habitats\, while others host unwelcome parasites\, or are nuisance invaders. Some are very easy to find and identify while others are more difficult. \nThis one-day workshop will cover the identification and recording of over 50 species of freshwater snails found in Britain & Ireland. It will include species found in ponds\, rivers\, streams\, canals\, brackish water and the margins of saltmarsh and lagoons; plus a couple of amphibious snail species that are likely to fall in! \nParticular emphasis will be given to species likely to occur in North-west England\, and those for which more records are sought. \nThe day will begin with an introduction to snails’ roles and habitats\, then focus on identification of their shells using keys. We will use specimens from the World Museum\, Liverpool and the National Museum of Wales\, Cardiff. Microscopes will be used for the smaller species. \nThe course is aimed at those with no prior knowledge\, though any experience of identifying invertebrates will be useful. \nParticipants are welcome to bring their own gastropod samples to have identifications verified on the day. If you have a copy of the 2021 FSC AIDGAP guide to the Freshwater Snails of Britain & Ireland\, please bring it along. \nOur tutor: Ben Rowson is a Senior Curator of Mollusca at Amgueddfa Cymru\, and the Honorary Non-marine Recorder for the Conchological Society of Great Britain & Ireland. He was an author of the 2021 FSC freshwater snails guide\, and the 2014 guide to slugs. \nAdults only (18+) \nLunch is not provided but tea\, coffee\, water and biscuits will be available. \nImage (c) Ben Rowson

SUMMARY:Witton Lime Beds and Ashton’s Flash Invertebrate Recording Day
DESCRIPTION:Book here. \nBoth sites are part of the extensive ‘Northwich Woodlands’ complex\, and are owned and managed by Cheshire West and Chester Council. \nWitton Lime Beds is a SSSI\, having been selected to represent a calcareous habitat in a county where there are few remaining natural outcrops of limestone or areas of calcareous soil or calcareous sand dunes. A RECORD recording day in 2016 noted 97 species (all taxa) including Bee Orchids. There is open herb-rich grassland with willow and birch scrub. \nAshton’s Flash has a large area of open water surrounded by reeds. There are herb-rich banks at the edges\, including a South-facing bank with abundant Bird’s Foot Trefoil used by Dingy Skipper Butterfly and Six-belted Clearwing Moth. Saline conditions prevail across parts of the site\, enabling the establishment of coastal plants. Shallow water bodies with an extensive summer drawdown zone provide significant areas of exposed wet silts. Reclamation of Ashton’s Flash was around 2000. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease be aware that whilst we welcome invertebrate recorders of all experience levels\, our recording days are not taught or guided sessions. (Check out our webinars/workshops here). \nEvents will be subject to cancellation if there is an adverse weather forecast. \nBooking essential: Further details regarding meeting place etc. will be circulated before the day.

SUMMARY:Shieldbug\, Grasshopper and Cricket Field Identification
DESCRIPTION:Book here – tickets are £7.50 \nOur tutor for the day\, Phil Smith\, will introduce you to some of the shieldbugs\, grasshoppers and crickets that can be identified on the Sefton Coast. The adults and most earlier instars of these small groups of UK insects are usually identifiable in the field once learnt so they make good subjects to add on to other recording you might be doing at a site. \nThe day will start with an introductory presentation at the discovery centre – and examining specimens from the World Museum in the event of adverse weather. After lunch we will drive a short distance to Freshfield Dune Heath where we will spend some time walking short distances at a slow pace across the dune heath sweeping and beating vegetation to find our subjects. \nAccess: Freshfield Dune Heath is reached via kissing gates so is sadly not accessible for wheelchair users. \nOur Tutor\, Phil Smith\, has been studying the national history of the Sefton Coast for decades and takes a particular interest in photographing and recording dragonflies and damselflies\, grasshoppers and crickets\, and shieldbugs.

SUMMARY:Beetle Families Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Book here – tickets are £15 \nBeetles represent a diverse and ecologically important group of invertebrates and include ecological roles such as pollinators\, plant pests\, decomposers and active hunters. Dispite being popular within entomologists and capturing the imagination of generations of insect enthusiasts they are often under recorded. With over 4000 species split between over 100 taxonomic families within the UK alone\, the identification of beetles can be a daunting and seemingly impossible task for the uninitiated. This 2-day workshop\, led by Dan Asaw\, aims to arm participants with the knowledge to accurately begin to separate beetle families commonly encountered by beginners. It also discusses the features described in a variety of identification resources and introduces the use of taxonomic keys. What’s covered in this workshop?-The key morphological features used in beetle identification.-An introduction to the use of beetle identification keys.-Access to museum specimens.-Practical experience observing and identifying specimens using a microscope. If you are thinking of delving into the identification of beetles through the use of keys or simply want an introduction to the key families of beetle in the UK this is the ideal event for you. \nAbout the Tutor:A keen educator\, and coleopterist – Dan is eager to share his knowledge and experience with a wide range of audiences. He has experience working in within the education sector\, rearing a range of exotic invertebrates and delivering natural history courses as part of the FSC’s BioLinks project. In his current role he helps create and deliver virtual natural history courses for the Field Studies Council. Dan is a self-taught coleopterist and is usually found either halfway up a tree or knee deep in dung looking for interesting beetles! \nAccess: There are lifts between each of the floors and assistance dogs are permitted \nAdults only (18+) \nLunch is not provided but tea\, coffee\, water and biscuits will be available.

SUMMARY:Ribble Estuary Invertebrate Recording Day
DESCRIPTION:Book here. \nRibble Estuary National Nature Reserve (NNR) includes extensive areas of mud and sand flats and is one of the largest saltmarsh habitats in England. For this recording day we will be visiting the saltmarsh area near the village of Banks on the southern side of the estuary. There will also be the opportunity to visit a grazed wildflower meadow opposite. \nSaltmarshes have a special invertebrate assemblage\, including the commoner species that support large numbers of wading birds and wildfowl. Relatively little invertebrate recording has taken place in this area so new site records can be expected. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease be aware that whilst we welcome invertebrate recorders of all experience levels\, our recording days are not taught or guided sessions. SUMMARY:Hilbre Island Invertebrate Recording Day
DESCRIPTION:Book here. \nThe Hilbre Islands Local Nature Reserve is contained within the Dee Estuary\, off the Wirral Coast near West Kirby and Hoylake. \nIt is an internationally important site for wading birds\, and a great site for spotting marine mammals. The flora on the main island also provide a good habitat for invertebrates. Plants include sea thrift\, yellow birdsfoot trefoil\, sea spurrey\, buckshorn plantain\, white sea campion\, ragwort and centaury. Hilbre’s specialities are the sea spleenwort\, growing on sheltered cliff faces\, and a sub species of rock sea lavender found in only a few other places in Europe. \nPlease note we will be walking over to the main island from West Kirby (which takes up to an hour) and spending the day there. We will be cut off from the mainland by the tide for up to 6 hours\, so this recording day will be slightly longer than usual and will run from 9am to 5pm. There are toilets and shelter on the island. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease be aware that whilst we welcome invertebrate recorders of all experience levels\, our recording days are not taught or guided sessions.
