SUMMARY:Amara Beetles Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Book here \nThis workshop will focus on the ground beetle genus Amara. This is a challenging group of 27 species in Britain\, many of which are very similar in their external morphology and often confused with each other. We will make use of existing keys in addition to new resources under development focussing on dissecting both male and female genitalia\, which should be of interest to those with a broader interest in identifying beetles. \nOur Tutor: Chris Foster is based at the University of Reading where he teaches ecology and entomology\, including leadership of the MSc by Research in Entomology. He has coordinated the national recording scheme for Carabidae since 2019. \nPlease note this is an advanced workshop\, previous experience of using keys to identify beetles is necessary to get the most out of this learning opportunity.

SUMMARY:Ichneumonidae: Sawfly Parasitoids Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Book here \nThis workshop will focus on the ichneumonid subfamily Ctenopelmatinae\, which are almost all parasitoids of sawfly larvae. This is a morphologically diverse group and there are more than 50 genera in Europe and plenty of species in Britain. The lack of good keys for identifying genera has often been the main obstacle to more people getting familiar with ctenopelmatines. A new key to genera will be introduced and the anatomy of ctenopelmatines explored. \nOur Tutor: Gavin Broad is a taxonomist working on ichneumonoid wasps. He is Principal Curator at the Natural History Museum\, London\, and is a co-investigator on the Darwin Tree of Life initiative\, to sequence the genomes of all UK species. Born in Liverpool\, he maintains a keen interest in the wildlife of Hilbre Island\, in particular.
