SUMMARY:Bedford Moss and Windy Bank Invertebrate Recording Day
DESCRIPTION:A general invertebrate recording day at Bedford Moss and Windy Bank (VC59\, Greater Manchester). \nWindy Bank Woods – Forestry England \nA flat\, open site with a number of large ponds\, wet woodland and rough pasture\, along with tributaries of the Glazebrook River running through. There are pockets of new planting to increase the woodland area. The site has no conservation designation. \nThis area (1 km squares) has not been subject to any focused invertebrate recording apart from some moth trapping according to Greater Manchester Local Records Centre (GMLRC). Indeed\, other than Lepidoptera\, they are just 3 other invertebrate species recorded on the local records centre database for the main 1 km covering these sites – all of which are dragonflies. \nBedford Moss – privately owned \nPart of the Astley and Bedford Mosses SSSI. These mosses are among the last remaining fragments of Chat Moss\, the raised bog that once covered a large area of around 28 km2 in south Lancashire north of the River Mersey. Astley and Bedford mosses were designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1989 and\, along with Risley Moss and Holcroft Moss\, are part of Manchester Mosses\, a European Union designated Special Area of Conservation. \nBooking essential: Further details e.g. meeting place etc. will be circulated a week before the day. You will be notified via email if the event is cancelled due to an adverse weather forecast. \n

SUMMARY:Bickerton Hill Invertebrate Recording Day
DESCRIPTION:A general invertebrate recording day at Bickerton Hill (SW Cheshire). This is a joint event with RECORD. \nBickerton Hill lies to the south of the Sandstone Ridge at the southern tip of the Peckforton hills and covers approximately 280 acres. It was designated SSSI status in 1979 for it’s Lowland Heath habitat (of which little remains in Cheshire) and reptiles. Indeed the site has been known to support a population of Adders but none have been seen recently. Major efforts have been made by the National Trust to increase the area of Heathland\, after large parts of the site had become wooded over many years. It will be interesting to see if any invertebrates strongly associated with lowland heathland are found on the day. Despite the popularity of the site\, none of 4 x 1km squares that it overlaps with have had >100 invertebrates species (excl. leps) recorded since 1980. \nBickerton Hill SSSI Citation: \nBooking essential: Further details regarding parking etc. will be circulated a week before the day. You will be notified of cancellation via email in the event of a forecast of adverse weather. \nMore site information \nThis site is open to the public free of charge but permission is required to take voucher specimens.

SUMMARY:Hale Duck Decoy Invertebrate Recording Day
DESCRIPTION:An afternoon invertebrate recording session at Hale Duck Decoy\, Nr Widnes. This is a joint event with Lancashire and Cheshire Entomological Society. \nHale Duck Decoy is a small reserve within the Mersey Estuary SSSI\, owned by the Fleetwood-Hesketh Estate and managed by Halton Borough Council. It covers an area of 3 hectares of Hale Marsh\, on the north bank of the River Mersey. The reserve is in the shape of an irregular pentagon\, surrounded by a 16 foot wide moat and a continuous clay bank. The centre of the reserve is occupied by the Decoy pond\, which has five arms radiating outwards to each corner of the pentagon. Between the arms (which are known as pipes) are five small areas of woodland. \nAccording to RECORD\, 105 invertebrate species (excl. leps) have been recorded within the same 1 km as the decoy. Most of these are flies and spiders from recording in 1999 and almost all recent records are of dragonflies\, except for some other groups recorded by Tony Hunter and Gary Hedges during an August 2018 visit. The site has much potential for further survey. \nMersey Estuary SSSI Citation \nBooking essential: Further details regarding parking etc. will be circulated a week before the day. In the event of cancellation due to a forecast of adverse weather\, you will notified via email. \nPlease note this is an afternoon only visit to limit bird disturbance and owing to the site’s small size. \nThere is no open access to the public. Visits are only possible at certain times guided by the wardens. Please see the Friends of Pickerings Pasture website for more details.

SUMMARY:Thrang End and White Moss Invertebrate Recording Day
DESCRIPTION:A General Invertebrate Recording Day at Thrang End Farm (Morning) and White Moss (Afternoon) in North Lancashire (near the Border with Cumbria). \nThrang End Farm \nThis is part of the same SSSI where the rare and elusive hoverfly Doros profuges was successful found in 2018 by Jim Cresswell and Steve Garland during our Yealand invertebrate recording day. However\, there is no public right of way through the privately owned Thrang End Farm so it’s virtually never visited by Entomologists. The habitat is similar to the adjacent Yealand Allotment with Limestone Pavement and numerous ant hills but is grazed\, at least by a herd of Fallow Deer that were seen during a site visit\, and also rabbits. There is no obvious reason why Doros would be absent from Thrang End Farm so this will be a good opportunity to search for the adult fly. \nYealand Allotment and Thrang End SSSI Citation \nThrang Coppice\, Thrang Moss and White Moss (a short walk east of Thrang End) \nA mosaic of lowland fen\, ditches and birch and oak woodland with scrubby areas of coppiced hazel\, blackthorn and crab apple surrounding rough pasture. This site is private owned and has no conservation designation but is currently being managed under a Higher Level Stewardship scheme agreement. \nBooking essential: Further details regarding parking etc. will be circulated a week before the day. You will be notified via email of cancellation in the event of forecasted adverse weather conditions. \nThe nearest WC facilities and shelter are at RSPB Leighton Moss. \nN.B. There is no public access to these sites apart from a PROW through Thrang Moss and along the Southern Edge of White Moss.

SUMMARY:Goyt Valley Invertebrate Recording Day
DESCRIPTION:A general invertebrate recording day in the Goyt Valley\, Peak District (VC58\, Derbyshire). This is a joint meeting with Sorby Invertebrate Group. \nWe’ll walk up the valley for 15-20 minutes\, recording as we go until we reach an open area of grass moorland and upland heath\, west of Errwood Hall where we’ll do the majority of recording. This area has no conservation designation but includes a variety of interesting habitats\, some of which are on open access land. Once we’re finished recording in this area we’ll return to the car park and there’ll be an optional drive to a few 1km squares with no invertebrates records in recent decades in a ‘square bashing’ exercise. \nPlease meet at the free car park (SK012748) next to the Errwood Reservoir. \nBooking essential: Further details will be circulated a week before the day. You will be notified via email if the event is cancelled due to an adverse weather forecast.

SUMMARY:Brookhouse Moss and Oakhanger Moss Invertebrate Recording Day
DESCRIPTION:A general invertebrate recording day starting at Brookhouse Moss (near Sandbach\, SE Cheshire) in the morning before a 7 mile drive South to Oakhanger Moss (near Alsagar SE Cheshire) after lunch. This is a joint meeting with Lancashire and Cheshire Entomological Society. \n\n\n\nBrookhouse Moss (10 ha – bog area much smaller): \nA privately owned SSSI designated for it’s raised bog habitat with one main area of open bog vegetation\, containing Hare’s Tail Cottongrass Eriophorum vaginatum\, Sphagnum fallax and Cross-leaved Heath (Erica tetralix) which is surrounded by carr woodland dominated by birch\, alder and willow. At drier edges of the site\, Oak and Rowan are found. The SSSI was judged to be in favourable condition at the last assessment (2010). According to the RECORD database\, there have been just 54 and 8 invertebrate species recorded in the two 1 km squares covering the site since 1980 (excl. leps). This day represents a good opportunity to visit high quality bog habitat in private ownership where little historical invertebrate recording has taken place. \nBrookhouse Moss SSSI citation \nOakhanger Moss (13.5 ha – bog largely dry): \nA privately owned SSSI designated for it’s raised bog habitat but in unfavourable and declining condition due to poor drainage control. There is only a small open area dominated by Cranberry and Molinia grasses. A canopy of Alder\, Downy Birch and Willow are found in much of the core and West side of the moss. The northern and eastern areas of the site are very dry and variably scrubbed over with thick Rhodedendron\, particularly on the Eastern side. According to the RECORD database\, there have been just 26 and 14 invertebrate species recorded in the two 1 km squares covering the site since 1980 (excl. leps). \nOakhanger Moss SSSI citation \nBooking essential: Further details regarding meeting place etc. will be circulated a week before the day. You will be notified via email if the event is cancelled due to an adverse weather forecast. \nNeither site is close to public transport connections. \nN.B. Wellies are likely to be required to reach the bog habitat if you want to keep your feet dry!

SUMMARY:Altcar Invertebrate Recording Day
DESCRIPTION:A general invertebrate recording day at Altcar Training Camp (Sefton Coast\, Merseyside) where we’ll be focusing on two species-rich meadows home to a number of rare plants such as Green-winged Orchid (Anacamptis morio). The afternoon will be spent on the extensive SSSI dune system\, which has had relatively little attention from Entomologists over the years compared with most other sections of the Sefton Coast (as a result of limited accessibility) with the exception of moth recording – County Recorder Richard Walker has been undertaking regular light trapping on the training camp for the past 5-6 years. \nThe meadows are not far from the car parks and both are on flat terrain. The dunes are a 5-10 minute walk from the car park and can be difficult to walk through where they’re steep and unvegetated. Stout walking boots are recommended for this site and participants should also be fit enough to be on their feet for the majority of the day. \nThe emphasis is on recording invertebrates and therefore the day is not suitable for complete beginners. \nBooking essential: Further details regarding meeting place etc. will be circulated a week before the day. SUMMARY:Rainford Woodlands Invertebrate Recording Day
DESCRIPTION:Our final invertebrate recording day of the year will take place at Rainford woodlands: “A mixed deciduous/coniferous plantation containing a number of regionally and locally important habitats as well as English Bluebell”. The site is split into two main sections of woodland (see below)\, which are currently used for woodland weddings and burials by Greenacres. The emphasis is on recording invertebrates and therefore the day is not suitable for the absolute beginner bug enthusiast. Participants should also be fit enough to be on their feet for the majority of the day. Further details regarding parking etc. will be circulated a week before the day. There are WC facilities on site. \nEmma’s Wood \nA St Helens Local Wildlife Site. \n“The main central areas of the woodland are predominantly 19th century Oak plantation with mixed broadleaf consisting of Sweet Chestnut\, Sycamore with few Hazel and Hornbeam. To the north are areas of 20th century conifer plantations of hybrid Larch\, Corsican and Scots Pine with some mixed broadleaf mainly birch existing within the conifer crop. Oak and some old coppiced Alder are present along the wetter areas to the south of the site. These wetter Alder stands cannot be classified as true overall biodiversity.” \nGrace Wood \n“As with Emma’s Wood the central sections of Grace Wood contains a mixture of 19th century broadleaf plantation and 20th century conifer. The broadleaf areas consist mainly of dense Sycamore with some Common Lime and rare Wych Elm. The conifer crop is dominated by Scots and few Black Pine. To the east and west of these plantations are areas of mixed broadleaf predominantly Oak with Ash. \nA feature of both Emma’s and Grace Wood is the presence of Rhododendron that is dominating large areas. This was planted in the recent past probably to provide cover for game birds such as pheasants. However this species has now invaded into large parts of the woodland decreasing the overall biodiversity.”

SUMMARY:Little Budworth Common Invertebrate Recording Day
DESCRIPTION:A general invertebrate recording day at Little Budworth Common SSSI. The site comprises a mosaic of broadleaved woodland\, lowland heath\, ponds and boggy mires. \nThe emphasis is on recording invertebrates and therefore the day is not suitable for the absolute beginner bug enthusiast. \nWe will also be keeping a look out for the Cheshire Horsefly Atylotus plebeius\, an Endangered horsefly that may already be extinct in the UK. Little Budworth Common was one of the last sites in the UK where the species was seen\, back in 1995. This record is supported by a male specimen held at the World Museum\, Liverpool. \nThe terrain is mostly flat with good paths but there are some steep parts and areas of bog where we’d like to record. Participants should also be fit enough to be on their feet for the majority of the day. \nFurther details regarding parking etc. will be circulated a week before the day.
