Events

Each year of the project we are holding a series of invertebrate workshops on identification, recording, curation of reference collections and field craft to help boost the skills of beginners and experienced entomologists alike. We are also organising invertebrate recording days across the region to bring together the invertebrate recording community and facilitate improvements to baseline data coverage at selected important sites. Results will be published on this website. Other events include drop-in sessions to facilitate networking and mentoring.

An Introduction to Soldierflies and Allies

10th March | 10:30 am - 4:00 pm

Soldierflies and allies (including robberflies, bee-flies, horseflies and others) include some of our largest and most colourful insects. Some are easy to find whereas others require dedicated searching, but these flies are within reach of anyone with an interest in insects. Along with the hoverflies they provide an ideal starting point for the study of Diptera (the True Flies), with good identification keys available in well-illustrated books.

On this day course you’ll get the chance to learn about the natural history of the group, and with the use of microscopes and museum specimens you’ll be able to develop your identifiation skills for this group. You will also find out how to take part in the Soldierflies and Allies Recording Scheme, and where to go for further help and identification advice.

This course is suitable for beginners with an interest in insects, as well as more experienced entomologists who wish to develop their knowledge of this group. Please bring any specimens or photos of your own that you wish to work with (optional).

Tutor biog:
Martin Harvey runs the national recording scheme for Soldierflies and Allies. He has worked in biological recording for over 20 years, with Wildlife Trusts, local records centres, the Open University’s iSpot project and the national Biological Records Centre. He carries out entomological surveys for a range of organisation. He is a qualified tutor, and has led workshops on wildlife identification and recording for various environmental bodies and wildlife groups.
